First! What are your goals? What do you want for yourself, your loved ones, and the organizations you are a part of? What really matters to you as regards your current situation. This is the question to approach with complete subjectivity. It is your privilege and responsibility to determine what matters right now, in collaboration with others if you’re lucky. What and who are you hoping to protect and what are you trying to achieve?

What are your structural affordances, and resources? What are your hard constraints in terms of structural and resource limitations? What do you have to work with in terms of money, time, personnel, and comfort you can sacrifice? What are your positional advantages? What are the advantages of the person or people threatening you? Try to answer without attachment or wishful thinking. Consider the facts empirically. Write them down and fact check yourself. Assess the strength of your position objectively using one of the strategic frameworks from the first section of part two.

The rest of this chapter continues with the step-by-step process of making assessments and doing the groundwork of strategy.
