If you were to find yourself in a conflict with an aggressive stranger, you probably already know that there’s a point at which they would be too close. But! If you haven’t spent a solid chunk of time training for that kind of encounter then you will almost certainly misjudge that distance. Even if you do estimate it pretty well, you’ll probably mismanage it. Negotiating space through communication, posture, and footwork takes hundred of hours of direct feedback to learn.

In principle, things are no different in romantic conflicts, business, et cetera. And while you’ve probably got more experience in these domains, just from living life, the terrain is different and more abstract.
