Over the next few chapters, I’ll be offering three different frameworks for thinking strategically. There is no contradiction between these approaches, but they are meaningfully different in their framing. The reasoning behind outlining three different frameworks is to show how widely varied conceptions of strategy are and that there really isn’t a single way of doing this. Ideally, you’ll be able to see how each of these frameworks could be described in terms of the other. And that will help you chose, find, or create a method which works for you.

What attracts me to this simplified approach is that it is very domain neutral. It doesn’t pertain specifically to conflict, battle, business, or organizing. It is a simple taxonomy of considerations, each with a principle that governs its effective implementation. This framework began in the military tradition — it will look familiar to anyone who has read the Art of War. Variations of this framework were bounced around the business world. And then it made its way into the personal development space, always just a little different. Having studied a bit in each of these spaces, I’m obviously putting my own spin on it.
